Durham Middlefield Youth & Family Services offers the following services throughout the year. Please check our calendar for dates and times.

Red Cross Babysitting Course :: Form
D/MYFS sponsors an American Red Cross Babysitter's Training Course two (2) times a year (fall and spring). The course teaches young people about the role and responsibilities of a babysitter, how to respond to an emergency or sudden illness, prevention of accidents, supervision of children from infancy through school age, and other relevant skills. This course provides practical knowledge while building confidence, self-esteem, and independence. We post the upcoming training dates here on the website, and in the Town Times. We also keep a list of all persons going through the course and offer it to parents looking for a babysitter.

Juvenile Review Board (JRB)
The Juvenile Review Board (JRB) creates an opportunity for children and adolescents who are arrested for a first-time misdemeanor offense to be diverted from the Juvenile Court system. The JRB is composed of members of the school system, law enforcement, and the community-at-large. D/MYFS provides case management services. In order for a juvenile under the age of sixteen (16) to avoid a police record, he or she must:

  • Admit their wrong-doing;
  • Be interviewed with their parents by a case manager;
  • Complete a student questionnaire;
  • Come before the JRB with their parents;
  • Follow all the recommendations of the JRB.

Workshops/Lectures
D/MYFS offers several workshops throughout the year. The goal of the "Can We Talk" workshops is to help parents do three things:

  1. Talk with their children
  2. Learn about the reasons young people abuse drugs, alcohol, etc.
  3. Keep young people healthy and safe by supporting the family rules, school rules, and the law.

Community Service
D/MYFS coordinates a Community Service program for teenagers referred for minor infractions by the school system, parents, or the courts. Service is supervised, and may by performed at a variety of locations, including local libraries, senior centers, senior housing authority, the Durham Fairgrounds, and the Middlefield Community Center.
